Not skiing in Åre and ‘old’ friends

April 2, 2012 by Helena Halme 1 Comment

This pretty mountain train terminus is one of my favourite buildings in Åre village.I've just come back from a skiing holiday to Sweden, where we'd planned to spend most of the time on the beautiful pistes of Åre. In the event I got only a few days on the mountains, because unseasonably warm weather … [Read more...]

Fäviken Magasinet, near Åre ski resort, Sweden, revisited

March 28, 2012 by Helena Halme 3 Comments

The atmospheric Fäviken Magasinet is housed in an old grain barn.I was a little apprehensive about my third visit to Fäviken Magasinet, the acclaimed restaurant run by young Swedish Chef of the moment, Magnus Nilsson, since often when you revisit a place, which you've been raving about, you are … [Read more...]

Sweden: Fäviken restaurant in Åre

April 12, 2011 by Helena Halme 8 Comments

You may have noticed that I'm fairly partial to skiing. Most people think I've been doing it since I was a toddler, learning to ski between the legs of my father or mother like those cute little things you see on the slopes nowadays. But no, I didn't learn to do downhill until I was in my twenties. … [Read more...]

More from Åre

January 3, 2010 by Helena Halme 7 Comments

On our last day in the Swedish ski resort it was bitterly cold (-20C outside) and I decided not to hit the slopes. Instead I took pictures of the views over Åresjön at different times of the day. In the morning as the sun rose mist gathered above the frozen lake. When the sun set around four pm the … [Read more...]

Happy New Year from winter wonderland

December 30, 2009 by Helena Halme 7 Comments

It's shaping up to be one of the best New Year's house parties ever. We are in Åre, the largest (and best) ski resort in Sweden, staying with good friends. This was the view that greeted me this morning. I may not be posting a lot until 2010...At the moment I'm just relaxing after a wonderful day on … [Read more...]
