July 26, 2016 by Helena Halme Leave a Comment

Good food for me is an important ingredient in a good holiday, so the Englishman and I were delighted to find an excellent restaurant in Uzes called Le Comptoir du 7. It was recommended by an American lady, Barefoot Blogger , living in this beautiful city, and was one of the highlights of our … [Read more...]

Easy Vegan Food: Lentil, avocado and mint salad

March 25, 2015 by Helena Halme Leave a Comment

When my daughter said she was going to be Vegan for the whole of January, I was a little shocked, but then thought it would be fun to try it out. After the meat excesses of Christmas, it'd do me and the Englishman good too to cut down on animal fats.Trying to be healthy in January is a bit of a … [Read more...]

Paris after Charlie Hebdo

January 21, 2015 by Helena Halme Leave a Comment

Big Sis and I have a tradition; we meet up in early January each year, and have a holiday a deux somewhere a little warmer than London. This year we chose Paris (hence the French above), since neither of us had been there for years. Then the unthinkable happened, and there was the most horrendous … [Read more...]

Thai style pork meatballs with noodles in a fragrant broth

August 25, 2014 by Helena Halme Leave a Comment

For some reason I've been craving Thai flavoured pork meatballs for some time, and I love noodles, so combining red curry paste and herbs, I made up this recipe. It was so good and popular with Daughter and The Englishman, I thought I'd share it with you.The meatballs … [Read more...]

A day in The Englishman’s 5:2 Diet

January 19, 2013 by Helena Halme Leave a Comment

I promised before Christmas to blog about what we eat during our 5:2 fasting days, and since I am still knee-deep in tax returns, The Englishman obliged me with a 'Day in the Life of…' post.Although I was the one who really needed (and wanted to) lose weight, it was initially The Englishman who … [Read more...]

Finnish comfort food for a chilly night in London

January 19, 2013 by Helena Halme 2 Comments

I know I wasn't going to blog, but due to popular demand…. ;-)Last night when the weather in the UK became decidedly Nordic, I fancied a traditional Finnish comfort food dish, Kaalilaatikko. This is a stew with mince and cabbage baked for a long time in the oven, which I've been craving since Big … [Read more...]

Five tips for the 5:2 diet

November 8, 2012 by Helena Halme 21 Comments

I've never been a great dieter. I've tried a few of the popular ones in my time, like the no-carbs Atkins, but the only one that ever has truly worked on me in the 'Less food, more exercise' one, which is the hardest one to do. ;-)But in the last year or so, with my bad back and frozen shoulder, … [Read more...]

The Scandinavia Show in London fails to impress

October 7, 2012 by Helena Halme 3 Comments

I suppose Father Christmas was there...I was a little disappointed at the Scandinavia Show. Even though I discovered new shops selling everything from Finnish booze, Swedish micro brewed beer and Norwegian smoked salmon to vintage Scandinavian jewellery (more about this later), the show failed to … [Read more...]

Equator non-alcoholic beer

May 28, 2012 by Helena Halme 4 Comments

In my quest of finding a non-alcoholic alternative to wine I was sent 4 bottles of new beer flavoured drink called Equator. It comes in a bottle which looks very much like a certain brand of alcoholic lager, and get this - as well as having no alcohol it has just under 3 calories per bottle, … [Read more...]

Last time I ended a series (The Nordic Heart), I went back and wrote another book because I had so many requests from readers to carry on.
