Falling in love with Rome

September 17, 2009 by Helena Halme 11 Comments

I can’t quite believe that this is my first trip to see the Eternal City. Just as well, younger and hungrier I would’ve never left this place. I’m back to the UK on Saturday and already dreading it. More posts to follow, now off to get ready for dinner at the famed Il Pagliaccio at Via dei Banchi Vecchi. I leave you with some pictures of my time here so far.

Our tempoary home here in Rome. Lovely newly decorated flat. Unfortunately it’s been done by a man so no hairdrier (new cut in constant bed head state), no pictures, no dressing table, too few mirrors. You get the idea. But very central by Via di Ripetta.

A very Roman street scene. Boxes were removed a few moments later, but I loved the contrast between the rubbish, shiny scooter and ancient door.

We had lunch in this small family run taverna. Bread and wine to die for. Fiaschetteria Marini, near Via Veneto and walking distance from Galleria Borghese with its stunning collection of Renaissance and Baroque art.

OK, had to put this in too…to add to the millions of pictures just like it.

Another narrow Roman street, with light playing on the contours of the crescent.

Do I really have to return to dreary, cold, practical England?

Yes me too I would love to see Rome. It looks beautiful, I would be fuming being unable to dry my hair , like you I have curls so that could ruin the whole holiday for me, as I would look like Marc Bolans sister. I always travel with my dyer part of being a hairdresser it duels as an iron.

I loved it as a tourist years ago; have hated going back for work reasons since then… not a good city if you have a pressing agenda/timetable!

I accidentally clicked on your Roman street photo – and got the full effect of sanding right there. As much as one can, anyway, when not in Rome. I can see why you don't want to leave. I've only been there once, in hot, humid August, and have always wanted to return in the fall or spring. I'd love to spend more than a few days there.

    Looking forward to your photos!

Oh I loved Rome! We spent a wonderful few weeks over Christmas holiday there one year and it was magic.

I've been back since (tho never to work- just for self-indulgence) and I am still stunned by the beauty of the city, and how it so permeates everything.

Your photographs are beautiful, but I found it almost impossible not to take a good photograph there… (well ok, mine all looked great to me, because it was my ROME!:)

Wildernesschic, I got used to the hair…how bad is that?

Robin, I'm not ready to take off my rose tinted specs quite yet.

Cheryl, I've heard August is the worst time to go. September was perfect even though it rained a few times. You must go again.

Truestarr, Christmas in Rome! Now you're giving me ideas.

Fabulous, fabulous photos. Havn't been to Rome but always wanted to. I live in Spain now, a British Expat. It's beautiful here too but Rome . . have to go . . and soon!
