My husband has been telling me that the reason we are doing so well in lockdown is because of the submariners’ patrol rules he follows. When he told me about it, I realized this is nothing new: these are the rules we have been following all our married life! We’re celebrating 36 years in May, so some of it must have worked. 😀
It’s Day 14 in Lockdown
Yes, we’ve been in lockdown for two weeks today and there’s no end in sight. But the Englishman and I are doing fine.
Part of the reason is that I have worked from home for a few years now. And he is an ex-submariner. According to him, this lockdown is much like a long submarine patrol. Apart from the daily walks outside, your own comfortable bed, and unlimited access to the internet, that is.
And being able to see me every day, I hope. (Though he forgot to add that!) So here are the submariners’ patrol rules:
Patrol Rules for Submariners
- Have a routine – knowing how your day is going to pan out keeps your mind and body healthy and passes the time quicker.
- Keep clean – don’t let standards slip.
- Respect privacy – if your mate looks like he wants to be alone, let him be. Your bunk is your private space.
- Avoid conflict. It’s easy to pre-empt any argument if you are willing to do so. If someone starts to lose their temper, don’t rise to it but give them time to cool down.
I’d add one more rule of engagement for HMS Halme:
If you find your partner dancing with her headphones on in the kitchen, let it be. It’s part of her daily exercise routine that you knew nothing about…
If you’d like an insight into navy life, read any of my books in The Nordic Heart series. The one with the most detail about the submarine service is The Faithful Heart, which is set in Scotland at the Faslane naval base.
